Raptivs (psoriasis medication) injections information

Raptiva injections (a psoriasis medication)

Raptiva is a medication used to treat psoriasis, a chronic, non-contagious autoimmune disease which affects the skin and joints. Some individuals may have contracted PML, which is a rare, serious and progressive neurological disease caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system, after receiving Raptiva injections.

In February of 2009, a public health advisory was introduced concerning Raptiva after three confirmed, and one possible, report of PML emerged among patients using the drug. Three of those patients died and all four patients had been using the drug for more than 3 years. None of the patients had been receiving any other treatments that would suppress the immune system. When PML does occur, it is usually found in people whose immune systems have been considerably weakened and often results in a permanent weakening in neurologic function and death. There is no known effective treatment for PML.
