Avaira Toric Contact Lenses manufactured by CooperVision and Eye Injuries, Cornea Tears

The Food and Drug Administration has recently announced a Class 1 recall for Avaira Toric Contact Lenses manufactured by CooperVision. A Class 1 recall is the most serious level of recall that the FDA issues. The contact lenses are used to correct nearsightedness or farsightedness in patients with astigmatism. According to the FDA, CooperVision sent out a recall notice to distributors and health care practitioners in August 2011 for approximately 778,301 lenses manufactured between November 2010 and August 2011. The FDA recommends consumers with the affected lenses return them to their eye care practitioner. Consumers experiencing symptoms with any Avaira Toric contact lens should stop wearing them immediately and contact their eye care practitioner. The issue with these contact lenses is a silicone oil residue in certain lots which can cause distorted vision and discomfort. However, these contact lenses may also cause serious eye injuries, leading to extreme pain. Some wearers have reported that after using the lenses they were in tremendous amounts of pain and some were diagnosed with corneal abrasions or cornea tears. CooperVision has issued more extensive recalls of the Avaira Toric lenses in other countries but has only issued a limited recall in the United States. CooperVision came under increased pressure to expand the recall as more consumers reported eye injuries that required emergency room visits. An FDA spokeswoman has said the department has received at least 15 reports of severe eye injuries relating to the CooperVision Avaira Toric Contact Lenses.
Many wearers of these contact lenses seem unaware of the recall and were not informed about the potential for eye injuries. Consumers can check if their contact lenses are affected by the recall at www.coopervision.com/recall or by calling 1-855-526-6737.
