Invokana, also known as canagliflozin, is a type two diabetes medication. It is used along with diet and exercise in order to reduce blood sugar.
Invokana has recently been linked with diabetic ketoacidosis, a serious diabetes complication where the body produces excess blood acids (ketones). Twenty cases were reported from March 2013 to June 6, 2014, and all patients required emergency room visits or hospitalization to treat their condition. Some cases of cardiovascular injuries and kidney failure were recounted as well.
The FDA issued a warning about these medications in May 2015, noting that they may lead to ketoacidosis. They also recommended that people taking these prescriptions look for symptoms of ketoacidosis including difficulty breathing, vomiting, nausea, confusion, unusual fatigue, abdominal pain. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, you should seek emergency medical treatment.
